Another appalling mining waste disaster

Another day, another massive mining waste disaster. Just weeks ago. Do we want this to be the fate of the Takaka River, the pristine Springs, our beautiful bay? Our community’s drinking water and lifeblood? It’s a no from me.

“A river ‘died’ overnight in Zambia after an acidic waste spill at a Chinese-owned mine. The spill happened on February 18 when a tailings dam that holds acidic waste from a copper mine in the north of the country collapsed, according to investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia.

The collapse allowed some 50 million litres of waste containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals to flow into a stream that links to the Kafue River, Zambia’s most important waterway, the engineering institution said”.
