Crown Minerals Bill Submission

“This bill fails to acknowledge New Zealand’s international obligations to climate change mitigation. It presents significant risks to the environment, local communities, and the integrity of the democratic process. The bill lacks thorough research, clear evidence of necessity, and allows insufficient time for informed decision-making. We urge that this bill be withdrawn.”

Recommendations from Sam’s Creek Collective:

  1. Protect Biodiversity: Ensure any legislation prioritizes the protection of local ecosystems and biodiversity.
  2. Phase Out Fossil Fuels: Commit to phasing out fossil fuel extraction and prioritizing renewable energy sources.
  3. Sustainable Mineral Sources: Recognize the importance of alternative mineral sources, including recycling and circular economy practices.
  4. Climate Action Alignment: Align with international obligations by committing to deep, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the 1.5°C targets set by the Paris Agreement.
  5. Withdrawal of Bill: Given the environmental and community risks, we recommend the withdrawal of this bill until further research and consultation can be conducted.
