Looking at Siren’s application in a wider context – presentation at Takaka Public Meeting

Excerpt: “Siren has written that there’s “hydro power available”. But that’s not the whole story. In reality
there is a power line nearby, joining the Cobb power station to the national grid. At full power the
Cobb station could generate enough for the mine, but sometimes dry periods force it to shut down
entirely.

In NZ we already use all the renewable power available, so if we start demanding an extra
10 MW from the grid for this gold mine, the effects will spread throughout the grid and and we will
burn more coal at Huntly. In the national grid, electricity is all one and the same. Our lives
are more connected than is commonly understood. The impact of the proposed mine will spread
throughout NZ.”
