Great article out this week after Newsroom’s Fox Meyer travelled to Golden Bay to join a public walk up to the proposed Sams Creek mining location. The walk was organised by Sams Creek Collective and local walking group Wednesday Walkers.
“The Government’s push for a gold-plated resource renaissance is butting heads with locals, including those in Tākaka who say a proposed goldmine could poison their river.
Sams Creek Collective members tell Newsroom the question is not about the value of the gold, but the price of extraction. Piling up acidic, arsenic-bearing waste rock at the top of their catchment is a price too high to pay, especially if most of the profits go overseas.”
