Just three months after its mining permit application for Sams Creek was declined by New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals (NZP&M), it is deeply disappointing that Australian miners Siren Gold can again apply for a permit.
After reviewing Sams Creek’s land status since May, on 14 August NZP&M has made the land available for an open contest bidding round, to close on 9 October.
With the expiration of its exploration permit, Siren had applied for a mining permit through its NZ subsidiary Sams Creek Gold, but its application was declined as it failed to meet the Crown Minerals Act’s requirements. However, the decision doesn’t prevent Siren from re-applying for a new exploration permit.
In its recent quarterly report, Siren CEO Zane Padman described the decision as a significant setback, stating the company is evaluating its legal, regulatory and commercial options to re-establish its position if circumstances permit.
The Bay community will soon learn whether Siren will bid in the open contest process.
Sams Creek Collective (SCC) continue to strongly oppose a gold mine above Tākaka valley’s unique water catchment and pure Te Waikoropupū Springs, whether backed by Siren Gold or a new applicant.
Sams Creek’s location and steep terrain are completely unsuitable. The future risks from arsenic and other toxic mining waste leakage are real and too high.
