Our local paper observes that “An Australian company’s plans to mine gold in Golden Bay are in tatters after its permit application was declined by the Government last week.
“And although the company advised that it is “reviewing the decision and assessing the options available to it, including any potential right of appeal,” it’s hard to see how the ruling could be overturned, given the company’s failure to persuade NZPAM of the proposed operation’s financial viability.
“SCC pointed to Siren’s unsuccessful attempts to demonstrate the quality of the resource as a key reason for the application being rejected. “Despite all their recent infill drilling, two-thirds of its MRE [Mineral Resource Estimate] remains in the highly speculative ‘inferred’ category.
“This deficiency was one of several critical shortcomings identified by SCC’s geologist Chris Stone in his scathing review submitted to NZPAM – in which he described Siren’s application as “profoundly inadequate in material ways.”.
