An Australian mining company’s push to shift its gold project near Tākaka Hill from exploration to extraction has reignited strong opposition, with critics alleging legal non-compliance, insufficient data, and environmental risk in one of Aotearoa’s most sensitive landscapes.
Its latest report came just two days before a second round of torrential rain swept through the region, damaging homes and land and closing scores of roads — including Cobb Valley Rd, the only access route to the mine — due to slips, landslides, and washouts.
